Big Spender

Submitted by Jim Kufahl

Dad had me help him in Hatley, WI with the demolition of an old tavern. When we got to the lower level pulling up the floor he called me over to introduce me to probation slugs "fake coin". He handed me a handful and said with a grin "don't spend it all in one spot". Later that day, on our way out we stopped at a swap meet. It was the coolest thing I've ever been to. There were four wheelers, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, Harley Davidsons and homemade contraptions everywhere. But the thing that caught my eye was a homemade go cart with a snowmobile engine on it. I asked Dad if we could buy it and he said "no, we don't have the money to throw away at something like that".

I then remembered that he had given me "money", so I walked to the owner and tried buying the go cart with a pocket full of slugs (fake coins). The owner laughed and then dad chuckled, grabbed my arm and we walked away. Still kind of laughing he said, "I told you not spend it all in one place, now throw that shit away". He later explained how illegal the slugs were.
